How to make a Necktie Template in 45 minutes
Coffee Break #89

My boss asked me if I know how make necktie template that to be produced using the loom, I told him no, but I said, If you will give me an actual tie for me to study maybe I can – but I’ll have to try and for sure it’ll not be the standard way. He agreed and gave me one of his precious ties. He also told me that he wants it in a specific size, which is around 140cm long and 20cm wide (that is the maximum size his machine can make, I presume, or he wanted to maximize the output).
I started dissecting the necktie without any hesitations and came out with these measurments:
*this is not his tie’s color
I noticed that the final cut will be 156cm NOT including all the folds and allowances (it was around 160cm including all) – and my boss wanted to produce it using the 140 x 20cm, so I took my coffee break for about 10mins. and contemplated on how to make a 156cm final cut out of 140cm. I came back and printed the font page.
On my first attempt, I cut them into three equal parts and rearranged them – it didn’t work. I printed it again and cut into two equal parts. The upper part, I cut them also into two equal parts – It didn’t work either. I tested my math skills if it’s still working and amazingly, I solved my problem! I’m very happy because I can still solve math problems.
They are not equally divided, I know, because of the horizontal cut, but I just don’t know why these measurements would be the best one because I realized that if I just divide the 156 by 3 directly to have a 52cm result, the connecting parts, which will be stitched later on, will be visible in front of the tie when worn. And because, the design will be horizontally placed on the tie I think I’ll gonna have problem on the pattern later on if it’s been connected.
Going back, I want to fit the whole size to the one my boss gave me which is 140cm. So, here’s what I did.
I still have 3.5cm allowance! Notice that if you measure it from its vertical cut line and not on its tip, you’ll not get the same sizes as the one I measured above. I don’t have to do that actually, it’s useless, but for my boss to see the exact measurements, I include them. The blue line there is the cut line. I just added about 1.5cm for cut and stitching allowance.
These is how it will look when you connect them.
Tada! We have a necktie template already!
Where’s the final output? Im still waiting for the production. That would be on my next post.
